Euro Stoxx 50 Performance: what happened 2022?

The Euro Stoxx 50 performance may depend on various factors such as EU economic situation, political stability, the energy crisis or even the strength of the U.S. dollar. Let’s have a brief introduction to the index and its performance in 2022.

Introduction

The Euro Stoxx 50 is a stock market index that represents the 50 largest and most liquid stocks in the Eurozone based on free-float market capitalization. The index consists of the major blue-chip companies, with a market capitalization of more than €3 billion, from more than 10 European countries. Additionally, most of the companies are represented from France and Germany.

The Euro Stoxx 50 Index has been around for over 30 years and has been in existence since 1988. Besides this, the index is managed by the index provider STOXX. Moreover it is one of the most widely recognized and followed indexes in Europe.

Euro Stoxx 50 Performance in 2022

The Euro Stoxx 50 Index is the benchmark index of the Eurozone. It gives a general overview of how well European stocks are performing, as well as it provides a basis for comparison to other markets around the world.

The energy crisis, the fears of recession and the hiking interest rates in Europe put the European stocks under pressure in 2022. The EURO STOXX 50 index fell in the price by -23,40% in the first 3 quarters of 2022.

Components of Euro Stoxx 50 Index and their individual performance

The EURO STOXX 50 index consists of 50 major blue-chip companies in the Eurozone based on free-float market capitalization. The index consists of stocks traded on the Euro Stoxx exchange including companies from different sectors such as banking, insurance, energy, technology, industrials, materials, etc. In addition, the index weights the constituents by the market capitalization. This includes both the free float and traded volume of each stock.

Stocks in financial services, energy and telecommunications were among the outperformers, while companies in the consumer product, real estate and healthcare sectors, which significantly underperformed the index.
